Work.
I've finished my fist week at work and its been a really interesting one. I've done a lot of work with Magicseaweed data looking at swell consistencies, wind and swell heights up and down the atlantic coast of Europe. I've also been working on another coupe of projects involving marine renewables.
Everyone I work with is really nice, and I went round to Ollys house for dinner on Thursday which was great. Last night a load of folks from work went to the pub where I got to know some more people who I havent being working directly with. It was good to get out and socialise a bit and the beer here is really nice. I was drinking a beer call Scapa Special which is brewed locally, a drop that the Jeffs from home would just love! Tonight im going to the cinema with a couple of guys from work which should be a good night.
Orkney continues to amaze me with its crazy weather and spectacular scenery and wildlife. We had a really nice sunrise just over the bay on Thursday. Unfortunately I didn't catch the best of it and just managed to take this quickly before I headed off to work.

Surfing.
I went for my second surf this morning. We had to get there early to catch the best of the weather because the wind promised to become rather nasty around 10 o'clock. There was a forecasted 4ft swell which produced some behemoths that were maybe 8/9ft. Fortunately these didn't arrive with every set and the average wave was maybe 5ft. It was light by the time had got changed, and we had this view from the car park.
We got a bit closer....
Wow right!?!?
You can imagine my excitement. Waves like this come along...well never really at Scarborough! Its a point break over some big rocks and the water can be quite shallow. Its a big no no surfing there a low tide. You have to scramble over a load of rocks and then paddle round a cliff to get to the line up. Its a bit gnarly, and its just nothing like I' ve surfed before. The waves are powerful and the take-off is really steep. I surfed like a right ninny, even though the conditions were as close to perfect your ever going to get. More practice needed!!

After about half an hour the sky turned red in a beautiful sunrise. When it wants to be, it can be so nice here. We'd been surfing for maybe 30 minutes and a seal came to check us out, having a swim around to see what we were all about. He decided not to stick around and soon left. A bit later we had another little visitor, a sea otter paddled up to us on his back chewing on a clam. She got so close I could see her whiskers! I swear I'm not making this up!!
It was an amazing morning!
