Firstly today I though I would show you a picture of the house so you can get a better idea of where I am staying. The house is down a small and very rough tack just in front of The Bay of Ireland.
After lunch I went to see some of the neolithic stone circles that are dotted around Orkney. The first and smaller of the two I found was called Sternness, and is located about 4 minutes drive east of where I am staying. These circles are a pretty striking feature on the landscape and if you ever come up here they are definitely worth a look round! But they weren't always as well though of as they are today. I read on one of the plaques that this particular circle had a near miss in the early 20th century when some farmer got sick of ploughing around them and tried to remove them with dynamite!!
The second and larger circle was called the Ring of Brodgar and was a bit further up the road. This circle had one stone that had been split in half by a lightning strike! Once again the wind today was very strong and it whistled past and through gaps in the stones making a very interesting noise which reminded me of a SpongeBob episode!
I then had a ride up the road to check out some more surfing spots. A lot of the roads here are single tracked with a few passing points along the way. When I was almost at Skaill Bay I saw a car waiting for me with a surf board on the roof so I stopped and had a chat to a very nice local guy called Dave. A relief after my previous experience with local Scots in Scourie! Anyway he informed me of a facebook page the locals surfers use so I can hopefully hook up with some of them in the future. Whist we were talking another guy pulled up behind me who was just going out for a surf. After introductions etc it turns out he worked at Aquaterra too! He invited me to come for a surf with him so he could show me the break but unfortunately I didn't have my surfing things with me. However he said go get your stuff and meet me back here. I made haste, believe it or not, because I was really keen to get in the water and the surf was pumping. When I eventually got back he wasnt there, but upon further inspection I think the tide was too low and he must have gone home not wanting to risk a broken board. A wise move!
I'm looking forward to work tomorrow and I'm stoked that there is someone there who surfs!!
Bye for now, more tomorrow X
