This morning brought wind (as usual), but also a fantastic sun rise that I snapped on my phone.
This picture was taken from the car park at work. The spire is the Stromness town hall and the body of water is called Scapa Flow, which Winston Churchill did something funny with in the second world war so he could hide a naval fleet in there. I cant remember exactly what but I think he submerged something to make a barrier and now its not fully tidal as it once was. Something for you to research Kenny Boy!!
The winds weren't too strong this morning but picked up throughout the day. This was my first experience of an Orknean gale. You can't wear a wooly hat when there is a gale here because it just blows it right off your head. I found this out the hard was much to the amusement of several other people who were obviously more seasoned to high winds and were holding onto their hats! Once I recovered I went to look at the sea. It was nasty and I couldn't get too close without getting wet so headed back to the office.
Perhaps you know already but a lot of the houses here are pebble-dashed. I though this made the island look like someone had come here and put up a load of houses as quickly and cheaply as possible. But it turns out that pebble-dashing your house was a sign of wealth here. How bizarre!!!
